Leopoldo Mendez

Leopoldo Mendez is a lino artists, I particularly like his work because of the amount of detail in his pieces. I partially like this piece due to the detail and the subject. Leopoldo is was an artist during the 19 hundreds and is from Mexico. Most of his piece is ink and only uses his carvings to portray detail with the white. He doesn’t carve out many large piece leaving white which I find interesting because he uses the small carvings to get the right detail in some areas, the only areas he carves a large amount of white is at the bottom of the piece however this matches his work well because it shows the different texture and gives a stark difference and shows different layering. For example there is a difference between the background, the horse which is the main focus of the art work and the wood. A lot of his work is similar to this one and have large amounts of detail in them. His work is particular interesting to me due the amount of detail he is able to achieve in this medium. Another reason I am practically interested in his work because he often portrays social and political problems. His work is very political and social fuelled due being heavily influence and plays a large in political and social activism. I like how the work has meaning and will often have a effect on people and portray his opinions. Another reason I particularly enjoy his work is because of its effectiveness to portray his opinions and what he is trying to depict even in only black and white and I believe this works well for his depictions.

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol is one of the most well-known artists when it comes to print making because he was the first to do it as a piece of art instead of use for example on clothing. I enjoy his work because of the amount of colour and although I find it simple it works really well. Simply doing different colours creates an entirely new image. This inspires me to create faces using print which is something I have yet to do, however I find it works really well and would be interested to try. Another reason I enjoy his work because of its vintage style and the subjects of his printing they are things you find around you as well as illustrations and faces. His verity allows for lots of unique images with their verity of colour. I partially like the Marilyn Monroe images as well as the objects like the can because I find it fascinating that such an simple object can make such as unique pieces of work. I find that his work makes me think of the things around me and looking at them differently and how they could become art pieces.

Paul Heaston

Although this artist is a drawer I find that this idea and context would work and be really interesting in painting especially water colour paints. Paul is a observational drawer and will often bring his sketch book pen and a pencil with him and captures the world around him in a sketch manner. I like his style not only because he will capture things with such detail and realism and will just draw what he see I also practically like him because he not only draws what’s around him but also himself drawing which is a aspect I haven’t seen before. I like him in particular not only his pieces but also his commitment to his art and the fact his art is in the moment and around his day to day like and balancing it with his every day life. I like him because it makes me think that day to day life can be seen in different ways and as art pieces although his work is often one colour due to bringing the sketchbook and a pencil with him I find the detail and the first person perspective interesting and unlike anything I have seen before.

Darko Topalski

Topalski is a award winning painter, a classical realistic painter and a professional artist. I love this artist due to his style and a work. His style and work is something I aspire too.  I also really like this artist because of his constant development and the use of different mediums not just the ones he is most comfortable with which is oil paint a medium I also partially like. He also experiments with other paints and branches into drawing. I like work as a collective and there are many of his works that I particularly like however my favourites would be the landscape painting he creates due to there realism and how they are captured. However if I where to give a favourite it would be “Sunset At The River Pond” due to its realism and the it has captured the sunset. Another of my favourites of his would be the sea side paintings.

Randy Hale

Randy hale is a water colour painter. I like his paintings especially his landscapes . I like his paintings because each painting is unique and some are detailed in some places whereas others aren’t however even in these rougher areas they still look realistic and detailed when mixed with the more detailed areas. I also like him because he has a rage of different contexts and not one in article. Some of his paintings are mountain paintings and landscapes of nature whereas others are buildings or one thing in particular like a tree. I like this artist as a whole instead on just one thing in particular because of his work and his style however with that said I prefer the nature aspect of his work simple because that is more my style and context I prefer. I also like his medium as well and find that even though he uses water colour where detail is harder to get he is able to achieve it and represent what he is painting very well. The image to the right is one of my favourite of his because although it is simple it portrays what he is painting very well and I also like the context he is painting because it is similar to something I prefer to paint and the context I prefer to use.

Alayna Danner

Alayna is a artist that I have recently come across due to starting a digital project. Digital artists a something I have yet to fully explore because digital art is new to me. I like this artist as a whole because although she works digitally it still has a painting aspect about her art and the context are art she does it similar to the context I am interested in. Alayna is a landscape digital artist and often creates fantasy landscapes that appear realistic. I like her work because it has made me look at digital art differently and what can be done with it and how I could use it in contexts I like to paint. One of  my favourite art works by her is the image to the right due to its amount of realism yet the fact it is fantasy. I like how it could seem real yet be a fantasy element and still hold realism.

Nick Mackman

Nick is a sculpture working in bronze and ceramics her art is of animals. Many of her art pieces are endangered animals and her sculptures are based of really studies and her observation of animals. Her are work is due to the life long love of animals and her extensive studying of them allowing the to be as realistic as possible due the amount of research into behaviours movement and looks. She ensures that the way the sculptures are positioned is true to life allowing for the most realistic sculptures. She is an award winning artist and her pieces are collected all over the world both by galleries and private collectors. Many of the spices are endangered and she works and supports many animal charities in support of the protection of these animals. I love her art work due to its astonishing realism not only the details but the placement of the animal and they truly seem real and adds to the realism because of extensive research into behaviour and movement. One of my favourites of her sculptures is a rabbit that looks so detailed and realistic. This is a style I would like to recreate if I were to do sculpture.

Heinrich Funk

I like this artist due to the classic style he has due to him being around in the 18th century. Another reason I like this artist is by not only his style but most of his paintings context which I landscapes which is a style I prefer and paint over other contexts. I also like his style and is something I like is the realism and detail aspect of his paintings and I would also make a guess that his art work is made with oil the only paint medium at the time. I also like how he only has one style and only paints landscapes. I like him as a whole and really like most of his paintings however if there was a style of his I would say I liked in particular it would be the mountain landscapes because the have more depth to the painting and gives t a more realistic and 3D aspect which I enjoy one of my favourites paintings of his is the image to the right. I like this image in particular because it is a beautiful piece and has a mountain background offering depth and realism.

Jonathan Yeo

I found after researching this artist I really liked his style and am interested in finding out more about him and his style. I like how he has painted the background allowing for the colours and lighter colours to be a lot more stark. I like how he has done the faces in so much detail and how it makes them so realistic that they appear 3D. I also like how the hair is often suggested and not actually painted allow the focus to be entirely on the face and not letting the hair take away from that. Similarly to him I have also painted the background trying to allow the lighter colours and whites to show up better and went for a realistic aspect in my portrait drawing. Some of the paintings I particularly like is the paintings of the famous people because you are able to see the comparison and how detailed the paintings actually are. One of my favourite paintings of his the “Lily Cole as Helen of Troy” because I like the elegance of it and the breath-taking detail.

Toby Wiggins

Toby is a portrait artist and works in realism. I like his work and my style is similar to my own painting though mine not being as detailed. I love his work because it is realistic and yet offers a vibrancy of colour however the colour doesn’t change or effect the detail or realism. I find his work interesting because although not as detailed as the artist before the context is portrayed really well and the observer can see and understand the subject because of the realism. Another reason I like this artist is the wide range of mediums, materials and contexts. For example one of my favourite paintings of his is doe on linen and the name of the painting is called “Girl With A Ring”. The different contexts allow for a different range of paintings and artwork allowing for interest.

Illuminating the Self

Susan Aldworth, Andrew Carnie

16 January - 29 February 2020

Is an exhibition I am particularly interested in. This exhibition is in response to ground breaking research and discoveries by Newcastle university about epilepsy. They explore this new treatment and what it is like to have epilepsy and express what it is like through art. The new treatment called Optogenetics is a treatment that uses light to control living tissue mainly brain cells which have been previously modified to be light sensitive. This exhibition explores what its like having epilepsy and what is happening to the brain. The art piece explores the scientific and engineering aspects as well as the big moral and ethical questions around this new treatment. One of these moral and ethical questions that they stand to look at is implants.

One of the images I find particularly interesting is this image that has facial features as well as appearing to me as a electrical and galaxy vibe. This particular piece is made with print and inks as well as photographs. This image is a portray of what it is like to have epilepsy and the prosses these people go through which is scans and treatments.

In conclusion I find this exhibition interesting and current. I find it particularly interesting because it is focusing on a current problem and treatment and it also gets people to talk and debate the treatment and allows people to get a glimpse of what it is like to have epilepsy and brings more awareness to this research.

No Strings: Online Exhibition

‘Beads in a Modern Context’

Is an exhibition about using beads in unexpected and untraditional way. The exhibition includes multiple artists using these beads in different and unique ways. “Faranak Sohi” was one of the artists that was working on this exhibitions she created everyday objects out of these beaded structures. One the sculptures she made out of beads was this piece of simply a bread, egg, plate and can which although is a simple context however the hours of work and detail due to the objects being simply made out of glass beads. I find this work amazing because of the detail and patience needed to make this art piece.

Another artist that I find particularly interesting in this exhibition is “Caroline Broadhead” who has made a painting style and detail level of image however this piece e is made out of beads placed in a way that when finished it creates a intricate image of a woman doing her sawing. I find her piece both beautiful and amazing because of the skill to make such an intercut piece and be able to make such a detailed piece made out of only beads.

Other artist working on this exhibition include Felieke van der Leest, Ran Hwang, Jim Skull, Shige Fujishiro and David Chatt. I find this exhibition truly interesting because of how each artis has created there own unique piece in there own style yet still being able to use the same thing “Beads” they have each interpreted it their own way and created amazing detailed pieces of art that represent there other work. In conclusion I find this exhibition truly interesting and shows me the different ways to interpret things and how they can be used to create such different things it also show me that even simple things can be art and amazing.
