Portraits

Portraits
Portraits are something I want to and will explore in this unit and may be something I do more often. I thought researching portraits in depth would be beneficial as well as experiment. I researched into faces and portraits in order to get practice and ensure that the work I will do is informed and as true to life and realistic as possible. It will also help and make doing portraits in this unit a little easier and less daunting because I would have already practiced and be more informed. I am hoping to do at least one of my final pieces with a portrait in because I have really yet to explore faces in my art work and it will help me progress as an artist and take me out of my comfort zone. If I am able to do this it will help encourage me to do more artwork involving faces which is something I am hoping for.

Black And White
Out of all the portraits the black and white faces interest me the most and is something I am more likely to explore both within this project and personally. I am not that sure why the black and white images interest me more, over colour, I however believe the black and white images and artworks of portraits have more depth to me, this could be due to the contrasting colours and how the black makes the white stand out more. I partially like the images which are really strong contract in the black and white, I believe I gives a strong foreground and background and makes the subject stand out better. I also believe starting with black and white portraits will help give me a starting point for going into drawing and painting faces because I wont have to worry about colour and getting the right skin tones.
Colour
Although I prefer the black and white images personally and since I am not as experienced with portraits drawings or painting I still like the coloured images and portraits, I hope to work towards coloured portraits in the future. I still however like these images one of the reasons for this is because the colour of the image gives it its own aesthetic which is a little harder to do and see in the black and white images. For example the top left has quite a colourful and lively aesthetic whereas the bottom rights colours give it an old fashioned theme, which could be added to even modern images and in the right context could appear old-fashioned. The coloured images and research will still help me however because it will still help me inform my artwork and portraits. I will practice faces both here, in my outcomes and in my drawing unit. I will practice faces by doing individual features before I do bigger pieces and full faces.
