Surrealism- Style 4

Surrealism was a cultural and art movement which come about in Europe in the aftermath of World War 1 and was mainly influenced by Dada. The movement is best known for its visual artwork and writing in reference to distant realities and the unconscious mind. Artists painted unnerving, illogical scenes and sometimes with photographic precision creating strange creatures from everyday objects and developing painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself. Its aim was to help resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into a reality, a super reality or surreality.

David Ambarzumjan

David Ambarzumjan is a very unique and one of my favourite artists and art work I have to work in the style and have chosen to do in this project. I love the surrealists and the surrealism aspect because each is unique in it own way. I have not found another artist that does this exactly and only found something similar. I will enjoy doing this artists and working in his style. Although I am working in his style I am not going to do a copy of his piece and am going to go for a galaxy theme which I may continue to the final piece in the surrealism subject. I am planning to do a galaxy background with a brush stroke and a landscape. In the artists work he has done a beautiful piece and I partially like how he has contrasted the night and day and how the city is in the dark and when nature has taken it back is in the day.

Neil Simone

Neil Simone is another artist that I am excited to work in the style of because surrealist aspect and due to how unique the artist and his work is. I like the aspect of using the seasons and how he has contrasted the colours and background against foreground, making the overall image better and less flat. Although I like his two art works I will not be making I direct copy when working in his style and will be going for a galaxy theme which is something I would like to use in my final piece for this subject. I am going to put a galaxy in the background and a planet in the foreground.

Final Piece
​My surrealist final piece is a Galaxy background with a brush stroke through it, inside the brush stroke is the United Kingdom. I have not done a digital image or drawing/painting to guide me before creating the final outcome because I wanted this final outcome to be more of my imagination, however I still did research in order to inform the painting and to get it as true to life as possible as well as allow me to get as much detail and accuracy in this outline of United Kingdom. Out of all my final outcomes I enjoyed this the most and I’m really liked how it turned out. This painting I believe progressed me as an artist and is one I have learned from because previously I have never done country outlines.
Final Piece-Research 1
This is the research for my final outcome this page shows the Galaxy research I will use for the background. In the background I am hoping to do something similar to these images, a Galaxy, however I don’t want planets I want it to be as abstract as possible. I’m also hoping to do something similar to these images in the dence of the colour and the vibrancy however I am wanting to do this as realistically as possible. Some of these images have really large stars, this is something I don’t want to do in my painting because I don’t want the attention to be taking away from the main focus which is the brush stroke. I will however still do stars but smaller ones. I will do the stars with a mixture of techniques some using paint with others using tippex, the tippex ones will be for more precise and larger stars. I like the idea of adding the red, purple and white similar to these images and will add this to my final outcome. I think this is good practise for creating more realistic galaxies and will most likely use this again both in my personal artwork and maybe other projects to come. In conclusion I am really excited to experiment with the Galaxy and to create this final piece.
Final Piece-Research 2
In the beginning of doing this research and when I was thinking about this final outcome I was originally going to do a full planet, similar to one of my smaller samples that is associated with my one of my artists. I however think I have decided to do 1 country which for me will be the United Kingdom as it is more personal to me, it will also allow me to practise more precise outlines of countries which is something I have never done before. I’m also thinking about putting clouds in like some of these images because I think it will be a more realistic, as well as have the appearance of looking down from space. I will also try to make the sea, especially the sea around the country appear as realistic as possible by putting in those greens an gradient blues similar to the image.
